Dear Lord,
In this season of waiting,
we often decorate our houses
with lights
to brighten the darkness
and bring some joy
to our neighbours and passers-by;
the colours make a brave show
against the cold, rainy nights
and when we see them
we feel our hearts lift.
We think of the effort
it may have taken
to put them up,
and we enjoy the shared beauty,
the communal feeling of anticipation
as we wait for the great celebration
of the birth of |Your son.
The lights, the sparkling colours,
can only do so much to hold back the darkness however,
and we know that what really warms us and lights our way
is Your love, shown to us on that long-ago Christmas Day,
and that, although we so bravely try to brighten
a dark world with our lights,
without the light of Your love,
this would be a dark place indeed.
Amen
